A cauda curta acastanhada e o escudo anal em tons amarelados s\u00e3o as duas caracter\u00edsticas que o distinguem dos outros cerv\u00eddeos. Possuem uma pelagem castanha avermelhada quando s\u00e3o adultos. A caracter\u00edstica mais reconhecida s\u00e3o as suas grandes hastes que perdem anualmente entre Mar\u00e7o e Abril, e voltam a crescer ao longo do ano seguinte.<\/p><p><em><span style=\"color: #b5b3b0;\">The red deer is the largest herbivore in the portuguese fauna and one of the largest cervids in Europe. The short brownish tail and the anal shield in yellowish tones are the two features that distinguish it from other cervids. They have reddish-brown fur when they are adults. Os nascimentos ocorrem em Portugal de finais de maio a princ\u00edpios de julho. A \u00e9poca do cio (ou brama) ocorre em Portugal essencialmente entre o m\u00eas de Outubro e de Novembro.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #b5b3b0;\"><em>Females start reproducing from their second year of life, giving birth to a single offspring (rarely two) after a gestation period of about eight months. Births occur in Portugal from late May to early July.
