O mocho-galego é uma ave de rapina noturna de pequeno porte e compacta, com plumagem de cor variável, acastanhada com manchas brancas. Exibe partes superiores castanhas com pintas brancas e partes inferiores esbranquiçadas, fortemente listradas de castanho. A cabeça é grande e arredondada, sem “orelhas”. A cauda é curta, castanho-escura com barras esbranquiçadas e as patas são compridas relativamente ao corpo. O bico é amarelo-esverdeado e as garras são acastanhadas, apresentando estas a ponta mais escura. A fêmea é, em média, mais pesada que o macho.
The little owl is a small, compact nocturnal raptor with variable plumage, typically brown with white spots. It has brown upperparts with white speckles and white underparts, strongly streaked with brown. The head is large and rounded, without “ear tufts.” The tail is short, dark brown with whitish bars, and the legs are relatively long compared to the body. The beak is yellowish-green, and the claws are brown, with darker tips. On average, the female is heavier than the male.
A dieta do mocho-galego é maioritariamente constituída por insectos, outros artrópodes e pequenos mamíferos, podendo incluir também pequenas aves, répteis, anfíbios e minhocas.
The diet of the little owl mainly consists of insects, other arthropods, and small mammals, and may also include small birds, reptiles, amphibians, and earthworms.
Esta ave foi considerada irrecuperável para viver na Natureza, devido a fatores relacionados com a atividade humana. Foram entregues pelo CERVAS ao Parque Ecológico de Gouveia para viverem até ao final da sua vida sem necessidade de caçar ou de se protegerem de predadores, servindo para a educação e consciencialização ambiental.
This bird was considered unfit to live in the wild, due to factors related to human activity. They were delivered by CERVAS to the Gouveia Ecological Park to live until the end of their lives without the need to hunt or protect themselves from predators, serving for education and environmental awareness.
