De porte robusto, apresenta cerdas bastante grossas, duras e ásperas de tons cinzento-escuro a castanho, dispostas de forma oblíqua para facilitar o escorrimento da chuva e a sua deslocação. Têm atividade noturna e, durante o dia, aproveita para descansar e tomar banhos de lama. Apresentam riscas horizontais louras que se esbatem até desaparecerem lá pelo meio ano de idade. Os machos adultos distinguem-se das fêmeas pela maior corpulência e pelos dentes compridos. As presas são apenas os caninos que, exagerados, arrebitam.
With a robust physique, it has thick, hard, and rough bristles ranging from dark grey to brown, arranged obliquely to facilitate rain runoff and movement. They are nocturnal and, during the day, rest and take mud baths. They have horizontal blonde stripes that fade and disappear by around six months of age. Adult males are distinguished from females by their larger size and longer teeth. Their proeminent tusks are actually exaggerated canines that curve upwards.
