É um pato selvagem designado de mudo devido ao macho emitir um som que parece um sopro. O macho é maior que a fêmea e apresenta mais carúnculas (verrugas vermelhas existentes na cabeça e ao redor dos olhos). É uma espécie cada vez mais frequente nas quintas portuguesas.

The wild duck is known to be muted duck (in portuguese) due to the male emitting a sound that resembles a whisper. The male is larger than the female and has more caruncles (red warts present on the head and around the eyes). It is an increasingly common species on Portuguese farms.
